Best way to cleanse your face according to a dermatologist
Independent.co.uk

This was an interesting article and included some very good advice. Here is a summary of the ideas in the article and my beauty tips on how to cleanse your face for beautiful skin.

1. Not Cleansing, just splashing their face - Some people make the mistake of not cleansing their skin, or just splashing water on their face. This will lead to a dirty skin and potentially breakouts. It's very important to use a face cleanser to remove all the dirt and grime from the skin.

2. Not cleansing morning and night - At night we all know we need to cleanse our skin to remove the daily build up of dirt. In the morning it is just as important to cleanse to remove sweat, oil and biological waste build up on the skin overnight as we slept.

3. Over cleansing - Over-cleansing can be bad for the skin because it can strip and aggravate the skin. This can be if the skin is over cleansed throughout the day or using harsh cleansers on your skin. Always listen to the advice of your beauty therapist on the best product for your skin and follow the directions on the product carefully.

4. Avoid foaming cleansers - Like the dermatologist in the article, I too am not a fan of foaming cleansers. They have detergents in them which can strip the skin. Some people like using them because it makes their skin feel "squeaky clean". This feeling though is not good for the skin because a squeaky clean skin is a sign of dehydration.

9 MYTHS ABOUT BLACKHEADS

1. Makeup causes blackheads

It was true in the past, makeup could cause blackheads but today most good quality makeup is made with non-comedeogenic (do not clog the pores) ingredients. If you are ever in doubt, choose professional and quality brands and look for "non-comedogenic" formulas.

2. Blackheads is trapped dirt in the skin

No, blackheads is not trapped dirt. Blackheads are clogged pores and the clogging is made up of skins natural oils, dead skin cells and hair.

WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

Blackheads are open follicles filled with sebum (skin's natural oil) and dead skin cells. Blackheads are caused by dead cell build up which clogs the pores and traps the oil and dead skin cells inside the pores.

3. Soap will clean away the blackheads

Soap is actually quite harsh for the skin, it will strip the skin and cause the skin to dehydrate. This can actually lead to skin clogging and blackheads.

4. You can scrub away blackheads

Scrubs can exfoliate the skin on the surface but scrubs can't get into the pores to remove the buildup. To get into the pores and dissolve the blockages you need ingredients that can penetrate into the pores such as exfoliating enzymes or salicylic acid.

5. Home remedies will get rid of blackheads

 - eg baking soda, cinnamon, lemon juice, honey, turmeric
These ingredients can't penetrate into the pores and can't deep cleanse the pores. They may have some surface exfoliating action.

6. Eating oily foods causes blackheads

There is no evidence to show that oily foods can lead to oily skin and blackheads. Hormones are responsible for oil production.

7. You will grow out of blackheads

Most adults have blackheads, and many people visit day spas and beauty salons to have the blackheads extracted. So, unfortunately,  one cannot "grow out of" blackheads. Daily skin care and beauty treatments can get rid of blackheads.

8. All blackheads are caused by oily skin

Most blackheads are related to oily skin, however, I have come across some people who had different type of blackheads that were related to the skin detoxing. These blackheads feel similar to milia, they are raised and spiky but are black in colour. Often they located around the major lymphatic channels and glands.

9. You can close the pores

Pores do not open and close. People skin texture and the size of the pores is determined by genetics and the amount of oil the skin is producing. I have an excellent series of articles discussing how to minimise open pores.
