Beauty Businesses Restrictions & Changes in Australia

Summary Of Beauty Services restrictions, and changes State By State - 18/5/2020

I originally did this research for my personal reference, however I have decided to publish the summary on my blog for others for quick reference.  If you are in the beauty industry and looking for information specific to your state you may find this useful.  I have curated the following information from the Australian state governments websites. As the changes are occuring day to day, week to week, I have included the links to each state's  government information website for you reference.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Friday 15th May
Operate or attend a beauty therapy salon for (non facial) services, such as nails, massage and tanning.

Friday 5th June
Operate and access all previously restricted services at a place that provides beauty therapy and/or cosmetic services including facial care.

Friday 15th May
10 people permitted at any one time for Beauty therapy and nail salons (with COVID SAFE Checklist)

Friday 12th June
20 people permitted at any one time for beauty therapy, nail salons, tanning, tattoo parlours and spas (with COVID Safe Checklist)

Friday 10th July
A maximum of 100 people will be permitted for beauty therapy, tanning, nail salons and spas, tattoo parlours and non-therapeutic massage parlours.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Phase 3 – will be finalised in the coming weeks - NO DATE ADVISED
Phase 3 is expected to include: beauty therapy and personal care services

All businesses are required to mitigate the risks of COVID-19. To reopen, businesses need to:

- ensure a maximum of 20 people per venue (excluding staff)
- comply with conditions outlined in the COVID Safety Guidelines — please read these before completing your plan
- complete a COVID Safety Plan
- display a COVID Safety Plan Certificate in a visible location on the premises — this is included in the plan
- maintain a minimum of 4 square metres per person
- maintain hygiene and frequent cleaning
- maintain attendance records of patrons for contact tracing
- carefully manage waiting areas to ensure social distancing.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Hairdressers and barbers can remain open provided the total number of persons present does not exceed one person per 4 square metres.

The following businesses are closed:

Beauty salons
Nail salons
Tattoo parlours
Beauty therapy or body modification services
Saunas, bathhouses and wellness centres
Spas and massage parlours

Stage one does not include beauty therapists. Stage two restrictions and services to be advised.

Beauty and nail services can recommence June 1,2020

Beauty, nail, tanning and waxing salons and spas are closed except for selling goods and gift vouchers (including for services redeemable at a later date).

Any business that wants to provide mobile services:
- must comply with all relevant laws, including work, health and safety and public health laws
local council and planning requirements
- ensure physical distancing at all times
- maintain good hand hygiene at all times
- take extra care when visiting those over 70 or those with a pre-existing condition (consider using the available outdoor areas).

Above all, do not visit even if you have the mildest symptoms.

Salons

Spas, nail salons, beauty salons, waxing salons and tanning salons cannot provide services, however they can sell their products. This applies to any business premises, regardless of whether it operates in a retail outlet or in a private home. The 4 square metre rule must also be complied with.

Hairdressers and barbers

The 4 square metre rule applies within the premises and personal contact with the customer should be minimised. Either go to the hairdresser or barber alone or with one other person.

Mobile services

Any business providing mobile services must comply with all relevant laws, including work, health and safety and public health laws, as well as local council and planning requirements.

Personal services businesses

Massage parlours and tattoo parlours cannot provide services, however they can sell their products. This applies to any business premises, regardless of whether it operates in a retail outlet or in a private home.

ACT Beauty Services to re-open May 30th! 

Personal Service Industries
Beauty therapy businesses, including nail salons, tanning and waxing services, day spas (including massage) and tattoo businesses can reopen from 11:59pm on Friday 29 May. These businesses must complete a COVID Safe plan, observe strict hand hygiene requirements and ensure physical distancing as much as possible.  Businesses cannot exceed one person per four square metres including staff.  These businesses should also keep a record of their customers to support faster contact tracing. https://www.cmtedd.act.gov.au/open_government/inform/act_government_media_releases/barr/2020/canberras-recovery-plan-supporting-our-community-and-our-economy

UPDATE 25/5/2020

Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing, nail salons, spas, tattoo parlours and massage parlours can now open with up to 20 patrons – the four square metre rule will apply to the publicly accessible parts of the venue, and a distance of 1.5metre should be maintained between customers.

Stage 3 restrictions are now in place

Restricted retail facilities include beauty & personal care - must not operate during a restricted activity period.

Businesses providing personal care services where there is close contact must remain closed.
This includes the following businesses:

-beauty therapy, spray-tanning, waxing and nail salons
-spa and massage services providing relaxation massages as distinct from therapeutic or remedial massage
-tattoo and piercing services
-spas and massage parlours providing relaxation massages as distinct from therapeutic or remedial massage

This restriction does not prevent the provision of any health or allied health services.

Can I still use a barber or hairdresser?
Yes, but the hairdresser or barber will be required to take your name and contact details. This is to support contact tracing should it be necessary. You should check with your barber or hairdresser about the steps they have put in place to minimise risks and follow their direction.

- Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing, manicure or other nail treatments, ear and body piercing, tattoos, body modification and other similar services
