How To Practice Mindful Skincare

Mindfulness is about being in the present moment. It's about being aware and conscious of your thoughts and feelings without judgement. Being aware of how you feel mentally, physically and emotionally can help relieve stress, decrease anxiety and depression.

As I always say, skincare is self-care. Practising your daily skincare ritual is a good way to practice mindfulness and self-care. As you practice your morning and evening skin care routines, slow down and pay attention to the skincare you are using.  Focus how it feels on your skin, the aromatics and scents, the cooling or warming sensations and the texture of your skin. Pay attention to how your skin responds to your skincare routine and how it changes over the days, weeks and months.

To enhance the experience, create a sensorial environment around you. If it's a beautiful sunny day, open the windows and feel the fresh air on your skin. Listen to the wind and the birds as you care for your skin. If it's the evening, dim the lights and light some fragrant candles.

Here is how to practice mindfulness as you practice your skincare ritual.

  1. Before you start your skincare routine, soak a face washer in warm water, wring it out and then place over your skin. Gently press in and hold for a minute and enjoy the sensation of the warm compress.
  2. As your cleanse your skin, slow down and feel the skin, the muscles and bones under your fingertips. Use slow circular movements as you work the cleanser into your skin, pay attention to the texture and scent, then remove with a warm face washer compress.
  3. Slowly, pour a small amount of the toner on the cotton pad, bring close to your nose, close your eyes and inhale the scent, paying attention to the fragrance notes in the aromatics. Gently and slowly press the toner soaked in the soft cotton pad into your skin.
  4. Next, as you take your serum, if it's in a dropper slowly squeeze out one, two, three drops, gently pat and smooth over your skin paying attention to the texture and the aromatics.
  5. Finally take your moisturiser, apply a small amount to the back of the hand and then roll your fingertips over the product to feel the texture. Bring close to your nose, inhale and close your eyes to pay closer attention to the fragrance of the moisturiser. Take note of the different notes and aromatics, even if your skincare is ‘fragrance free’, you will smell something. Gently and slowly pat the moisturiser on your face and smooth out in slow, deliberate strokes. Feel the texture of the cream and the texture of your skin under your fingertips.
